Sanding Equipment

For over 85 years, GW has provided an assortment of sand trap technology for the locomotive and, since the middle 1970's, many light rail vehicles operating around the world. A variety of Sand Traps and Controllers with or without Rotary Shut-Off replace a family of sand traps dating back to 1914. GW traps are designed to provide unrestricted flow of sand to a point between the rail and wheel to enhance traction. Several models of traps are available with adjustable or fixed sand delivery features to meet your operating needs.

500 Series Sander Control Valve
The 500 Series Sander Control Valve is the "Heart of the Diesel Electric Sanding System" for inboard and outboard sanding. The "3-in-1" System Charges, Sands and Cleans each time the valve is actuated manually or as programmed by the on-board adhesion system. Epoxy impregnated and encapsulated "Class F continuous duty" coils in a variety of voltages are standard equipment with Faston tab (quick disconnect) or terminal block connection with or without suppression devices.

277 Series Sand Trap with Rotary Shut-Off
The 277-2 Sand Trap and Controller with Rotary Shut-Off remains the industry standard for uniform sanding to enhance locomotive traction. The 277-2 Sand Trap is designed with a unique adjustment feature that determines the amount of sand delivered to the point of contact between the rail and wheel interface.

573 Series Sand Trap with Rotary Shut-Off
The 573 Series Sand Trap with Rotary Shut-Off is designed to provide uniform sanding to enhance locomotive traction. It has an adjusting nut and nozzle combination that increases or decreases the amount of sand delivered to the point of contact between the rail and wheel interface.

209 Series Flange Sand Traps
The 209 Series Flange Sand Traps are designed to provide unrestricted flow of sand to enhance traction between the wheel and rail. The 209 Series Traps are lightweight with a low profile for those under the platform locations and/or on the truck-mounted sandbox typically found on an industrial type locomotive or light rail vehicle.
