Graham-White Unveils New Products at Global Railway Tech 2004
Graham-White Manufacturing Company, the industry leader in the manufacture of air drying technology, heavy-duty pneumatic and electro-pneumatic valves and accessories, has added two new products to its line of equipment for the rail industry. The products were announced at Global Railway Tech 2004, the 43rd Annual Convention of the Railway Supply Institute (RSI), held in Chicago on Sept. 26-29.
"Our company has been built on our reputation of innovative technology and customer service," says Jim Frantz, president and CEO of Graham-White. "These new products help our customers automate the way traditional tasks have been done, saving them time and lowering life-cycle cost for their equipment."
According to W. Stewart Bruce, vice president of marketing, pre-production models of the Safeset™ Locomotive Wheel Style Brake and the Computerized Single Car Test Device drew positive responses from among the more than 5,000 attendees at this year's show.
"Our Safeset Wheel Style Brake is an automated electric motor driven system like GW's Lever Style Brake currently in service on approximately 250 locomotives. With a push of a button the brake will be set or released. The Wheel Style incorporates the standard manual wheel should electrical power not be available," says Bruce. The new Wheel Style Brake will be available for both OEM and retrofit applications.
Graham-White also unveiled a Computerized Single Car Test Device at the show. "This device uses an integrated PC or attached PC to remotely test the integrity of single car brakes", explains Bruce, "reducing the time required for each test while increasing the reliability and documentation of maintenance inspections." The Computerized Single Car Test Device will meet all AAR standards and is expected to be in production after the first of the year.
Other products showcased at the conference include:
- 994-500 Air Dryer -- the newest version of air dryer to use Graham-White's innovative technology to produce clean, oil-free, dry compressed air for use in locomotives, the 994-500 offers a lower-cost alternative for locomotives operating in the range of 3,000-4,000 hp. The 994-500 is fully interchangeable with the "life cycle cost saving" 994-100 series and has half the moving parts of the original 975 Series line, saving the customer both initial and upkeep expense.
-
E-Bell technology -- with no moving parts (and consequently no ongoing maintenance) and with a sound that equals or surpasses a pneumatic bell, the E-BELL is rapidly becoming an industry standard for domestic clients.
-
Sludge Braker Air Dryer -- this small control system "twin tower" dryer helps to protect remote control pneumatic equipment from water vapor damage. Successfully used as a dryer for air brakes in trucks and buses, Graham-White is now bringing this proven product to the rail industry for RCL equipment as well.
"One of our goals in participating on the Global Tech 2004 conference was to not only showcase our new products but to demonstrate the depth of our product line," says Lenny Wedge, manager of engineering. "We're continuing to broaden our product line for both OEM and retrofit applications in response to growth and changes in the market, both in the U.S. and emerging markets such as India, Southeast Asia, and Latin America."
Remanufacturing Services Grow in Response to Customer Demand
The conference also provided an ideal platform to showcase Graham-White's expanded remanufacturing capabilities, says Wedge.
"Studies have shown that Class I and secondary rail systems can save a significant percentage of their remanufacturing costs by outsourcing this task to shops such as ours," he says. Wedge points out that in addition to the plant in Salem, Va., Graham-White recently has opened a Western location in Carson City, Nv.
"In addition to remanufacturing GW products, we have expanded our expertise and resources to include 26L and freight brake as well as an assortment of other components on the locomotive and cars including oil pumps, brake cylinders, horns, air shutters, and other products," says Bruce. We also offer an inventory management program to support the railroads needs for updated information.
Says Jim Frantz, "For many years, we have been well known for the support which we have given to our own products. Now, we're expanding this service to include a broad array of products from other manufacturers as well."
